Last night at dance practice, doing what I love, I accidently slipped and fell. It was an accident of course, and i knew i would be fine, but i went to the hospital anyways. The nurse asked my mom why we were there, and my mom told the nurse that I had fallen hard on my head and needed to be checked out. It was late, I was exhausted, emotionally and physically. This was the last place I wanted to be. There was one other woman sitting in the waiting room. She told me that she was there because her son had a brain injury also. I told her i hoped he was okay, and I noticed the look in her eyes that said he would never be okay. She told me in that in 2000 her son was following his friends in a car and got hit and rolled off the car and fell on his head, right onto the pavement. I had goosebumps. He had been physcotic ever since. This, I realized, must have been traumatic. Matthew was only 20 years old when the accident happened, but she told me he acted like he was 11. Matthew and his mom were at the hospital a lot, because he often had fits of rage. As i was sitting there, as much as I tried to figure it out, I still couldn't fathom why accidents like that happen to good, innocent, life-loving people. I was lucky enough that nothing was wrong with me, that it was just a minor fall. I was really lucky, unlike matthew who wasn't so fortunate. Being thankful, I realized, makes you happy. It makes you feel happy with what you're blessed with, and opens your eyes to people who aren't as lucky.
